Industry Trends

The collision repair market for parts is dominated by OE replacement parts with car companies controlling more than 75% of the repair parts market which in an of itself results in limiting choices and increases costs to insurance companies, shops, and consumers alike.

The recent litigation brought by Ford challenging the aftermarket on design infringement within an OEM-controlled marketplace, threatens the future vitality of the independent parts industry and which would only serve to further increase costs of repair to insurance companies, shops and customers. It would also further the monopoly by OEM on repair parts.

The Quality Parts Coalition (QPC) has called upon Congress to include “repair” language in U.S. design patent laws to protect competition and allow lower costs for collision repairs through replacement part alternatives; preserving the consumer’s right to choose a quality non OEM part which is lower in cost.
